UNILORITES Divided Over Ban On Sale Of Handouts

There are strong indications that the announcement by the authorities of the
University of Ilorin , UNILORIN , Kwara state , north central Nigeria , that lecturers
should desist from selling handouts to students may not hold water .
Findings by our correspondent have revealed that it was not the first time the
school authorities would be announcing this, but nothing can stop the
lecturers from carrying out the repulsive act .

In a bid to sensitise the students and put the school in its rightful position , the
school authorities had on Monday issued a warning by the school Registrar ,
Mr. Emmanuel Obafemi , reminding the lecturers that the enforcement of the
ban on sale of handouts was still on.

Mr. Obafemi frowned at the manner in which lecturers engaged selling
handouts to students , a development he said the school authorities would not
condone. The Registrar said that despite the circulars prohibiting the sale of
handouts to students , “there is a renewed activity of this illegal business on
the campus.

“The sale is perpetrated by lecturers using devious means and agents such as
shop owners and class representatives to reach the students .
“The unwholesome practice must not be allowed to continue , given the
growing positive image of the university. ”

In the statement deans and heads of departments were also advised to be
mindful of the extant circular proscribing the sale of handouts to students .
“Any lecturer found violating this directive will be brought to book, ” it said .
Students of the institution told P . M. NEWS Campus Square that the
announcement is not new to them and the lecturers involved in the act always
get away with it since the school management are never with them in class to
monitor what ’ s going on between them and their lecturers .

Jumoke, a student of the institution , told our reporter that “the school
management has been trying their best to make students use the school library
whenever they want to read but lecturers would still have their way in selling
handouts to us since we can’ t complain of not buying.

“Some lecturers even attach marks to any handout we buy from them and
those who don ’ t buy already know the implications of such act. ”
Another student , Akande decried the ban on handouts, noting, “exploitation of
students by lecturers in this school is not that pronounced but it happens
underground.

“And I cannot say if someone leaked their secrets to the school authorities for
them to have issued this warning . But it also means that their business is
gradually getting out of control. They are very perfect in their dealings with
students as many of the lecturers have contracted agents outside the school
to help them sell to us and they refer us to where we can get their handouts
for assignment .

“Selling of textbook is an anomaly in Nigeria ’ s educational system which can
be eradicated when we start correcting the wrongs . Exploitation of students by
lecturers comes in different ways such as sexual exploitation of female
students , sale of course handouts and irrelevant text books and extortion of
money from students before they can pass their exams .” A final year student of
the institution who spoke on the condition of anonymity , explained that , “we
should not sit down and start saying other countries are also experiencing
what we are facing here.

“When something is going wrong in other countries that does not mean that
we should also tow the same direction . It is a global phenomenon , yes but we
can set things right and let others learn from us .

“On the sales of course hand- outs and irrelevant text – books , I can
categorically tell you that on many occasions, some lecturers threatened us to
buy their text -books by all means, failure to do so meant no C . A. or automatic
carry – over in that particular course, while some will even go to the extent of
giving us a compulsory assignment in the text – book, just to make money .

“Exploiting students in one way or the other by lecturers is an abuse of power,
which also corrupts the educational system. “Lecturers should be seen as
parents, they should also portray themselves as role model to the students . My
advice to some lecturers engaged in this act is that they should remember the
law of Karma which means what goes around comes around.

“And my advice to our institutions is that there should be standard and ethics
in our institutions which will check the actions of our lecturers . A special
committee should be set up to monitor their activities.”

Reasons Ladies Prefer To Live Off-Campus

Ladies prefer off-campus for different reasons.
Some for very good reasons, others for selfish reasons while the rest for poor reasons.

I've met some whom before they left for off-campus were good girls until they relocated to off-campus.

They began to dress provocatively. They walk with me and then look around if any other guy is after them- Of course they're just friends. I felt I was " spoiling market" for them, had to leave them.

Below Are Some Reasons:

1. So Much Money

She loves the hostel but because of the so much money she just goes ahead to get an apartment off-camp. Funny, she hardly stay or sleeps there  Isn't that a waste?

2. Boyfriend influence- Co- Habitation

Most girls came into Year living in the hostel. From year 2, a guy found them and since then, they've become practicing couples. Husband and Wife things

3. Zero Tolerance For Others

For some girls, their only reason is that they can tolerate others. They're this Aje- Butters. Any little thing annoys them so they feel they had better stay alone off-camp.

4. To Concentrate On Studies

This other sects are few joor! They are in school to study alone. The hostel life is too noisy for them so they opt for Off- Campus.

5. To Explore On Their Sexuality.

They are now from mummy's web of control. They came in as Virgins or Sub- virgins but now they want to explore. Their main inner reason is to have that privacy with a guy. That's all. Forget what they claim.

6. To Feel Among

These other sect don't know where they fall. Their friends are moving to off- campus. They also move to prove that they also have the cash

7. Hygiene Concerns

This is so true and real. Many of our hostels distribute toilet diseases for free. Especially for girls, those diseases are quite dangerous.

So ladies, where do you fall?

Guys, what do you think?

ANNOYING THINGS UNILORITES GO THROUGH

•EXCESSES OF QUEUES: Too much of everything, they say isn't a good thing. Don't get me wrong,to queue is a good thing as long as it promotes orderliness but when it becomes a regular thingy,it's one hell of a frustrating thing;especially right under the SUN.
I mean, you queue to enter banks,at ATM spots,at the park(after hours of tiresome lectures o),restaurants, exam halls, lecture theaters, you name it!

•TRANSPORTATION: You have an 8am class on a Monday, you arrive at the bus-stop any later than 7:30am,then rush no more, for thou shall be no lesser than 20 minutes late because the distance from town to school is just like a journey of Egypt to Israel by foot.
Second scenario, you just finished a 6pm class(let's say you get fortunate enough, the 'workaholic' lecturer releases you by 6:20pm)*lol. Just have it at the back of your depressed mind that you'll get home nothing earlier than 8pm after spending hours on the snake-like queue(Unless you 'shunt' your way out. But if Cadet catch you ehn,na Tanke straight up o *tongue-out)

•FALSE RUMOURS: Argh! This is my favourite. You see,Unilorites and false rumours are synonyms. Prof. A.G Ambali said students will be given N10,000 each. UNILORIN is now number 1 in the Universe. CBT results will be out on the 31st of February. Our Level Adviser gave birth to quadruplet. Freshers will be given 'I-pad'(how much are you paying that the school will now give you I-pad? C'mon,it's a school, not a charity) *Some Unilorites ehn* Sometimes I wonder what planet some students are from.

•SUN: If the World Meteorological Organization had visited UNILORIN in 2012,they wouldn't have named the 'Death Valley' the hottest place in the world. You go to school in the morning looking cool, bright and dapper but it's your dark twin that arrives in the afternoon.
The most annoying part about the Sun is it's dehydrating aspect. So annoying. Going to the Bank Area by foot is like taking a voluntary walk to hell. It's no different from carrying the sun on your head. Wearing caps and shades offers little/no help I must say. *By the way,I wonder how the 'Suit and Tie' and 'Varsity Jacket' dudes cope.

•HOSTEL PALAVA: Though this only happens during the first 6 weeks of resumption, but I still find it funny. I had determined friends who skipped classes and lunch for 3 weeks just to sit in front of computers waiting patiently for the hostel portal to be opened. In the end, they still weren't able to get one.How sorrowful. lol. If only they devoted the time to study;who knows?*shrugs* They could have been scholars *hehe

Feel free to add yours!!!

UNILORIN students relive African experiences in Virtual Classroom

Some students of the University of Ilorin participated in a Global Class Lesson
Plan involving students from the Colombia University, New York and Durham
College, Canada, during a virtual classroom session last Wednesday (February
11, 2015).

The event, which took place at the Network Operating Centre (NOC) of the
University of Ilorin, was aimed at enhancing interaction between students from
different cultures while giving them the opportunity to engage directly with a
global thinker who can enrich their understanding.

The theme of the lesson plan was “The Worldview”, which was discussed
among students of different cultures with the guest lecturer, Prof. Edwin
McDaniel of San Diego State University, USA, moderating.

A 400 level student of the Department of History and International Studies, Raji
Ibrahim Olabode, who shared his experience and knowledge he gained through
the virtual class platform, said, “This is another milestone achievement of the
University of Ilorin. This class has created a platform for us to explore other
parts of the world. I have always tried as much as possible to defend the
cultures and traditions of Africa and Nigeria.

What I have done today is to try to sell Nigeria as a country, try to sell Africa as a continent to other parts of the
world, making them understand that worldview is not just Eurocentric or
American alone; but that we African also have something to contribute to the
world and I appreciate the management of the University of Ilorin and the
Centre for International Education (CIE) for facilitating and making this
possible.”

Another 400 level student of the Department of History and International
Studies, Abdullahi Mohammed Jamal, said, “The University of Ilorin has given
an opportunity for Africa to be heard”.

On her part, Roseline Adidi, a 300 level Mass Communication student, said, “I
feel very happy and privileged to be part of this because it has given us a
platform to express ourselves and our views and to learn about other cultures
and other people’s views.”

Interacting with the students after the global class, Dr. (Mrs.) Saudat Abdulbaqi
of the Department of Mass Communication, described the virtual classroom as
an interesting session, which indicates that Nigerians study hard. “It is not all
of us that will have the opportunity of going outside Nigeria but that is just a
physical thing. Today, we have all gone abroad; we have been to Colombia,
New York”, she said.

Sacking Of 49 UNILORIN Lecturers Regrettable – Ex Vice-Chancellor

Immediate past chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Prof
Shuaib AbdulRaheem, has regretted some of his actions during his tenure as
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), particularly the widely
publicized issue of the sacked 49 lecturers of the institution.

The Supreme Court reinstated the sacked lecturers in 2009 eight years after
the then VC approved their disengagement from the institution.
Prof AbdulRaheem, who is also a governorship aspirant under the platform of
the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara state, spoke to reporters in
Ilorin, the state capital.

The professor of literature, who likened himself to a pediatrician, added that
everybody had learnt his mistakes in the saga

He said; “And you will find out that since all of those years there hasn’t been
any such crisis. No Vice Chancellor has come to face the kind of crisis I faced
because everybody has learnt their mistakes. So it is good that it happened
but it is regrettable that lives have been stagnated because of that, but again,
the reversal has healed the wounds and I hope it will help to heal the wounds
by stopping people to refer to that and make them look at the positive things
that came out of that disagreement.

“The issue of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) is a past event, but of course,
because it affected human beings it will continue to recur. It is only the
negative mind that focuses on the negative things. Human being live and learn
every day, we had cause to disagree with those gentlemen not because it was
personal it was in defence of the institution to which we had sworn to uphold
its integrity.

“If along the line something happened and some people had to be sacrificed
momentarily that was not borne out of my personal animosity or anger at
them it was because that what the regulations of the university showed me at
the time.

“But the law of the land reversed that. So one minus one is zero, they got one
we got one. In any case they are back at work and they are still doing well. In
fact, they found a more peaceable conducive environment for themselves to
live together with others.

“If you say somebody was hurt I compare my public posture with that of a
pediatrician who cares for babies, to whom ten mothers have brought sick
children and he has applied his skills to cure nine then one died and the
mother goes haywire and says the world is going to fall apart. For me, I don’t
see that as a problem.

“I am grateful I have been able to cure nine, so inevitably one had to die.
Sometimes we win some and lose some that is what life is all about. Don’t let
us keep going all over to the past especially the negative parts of the past.
That is my take on the UNILORIN saga”.
