The Truth About The Early 1900s Nigeria Vs India Match (1 - 99)!

Virtually everybody born before the invention of the internet must have heard the tale of a nonexistent football match between Nigeria and India   that obviously took place in a parallel universe and somehow we got to hear the gory stories of that match.

Though there are many variations of the story, every prevaricator seems to agree on a couple of facts about this fictional football match. Each storyteller agrees that;

1. This match ended with India scoring 99 goals and Nigeria scoring just one goal.

2. Nigerians where unable to kick the ball because the football kept turning to a lion (or                something scary) to prevent them from playing the soccer ball.

3. The Indians later agreed that if Nigeria could score a goal, they would concede defeat

4. Samuel Okwaraji scored the winning goal and lost his life in the process.

5. FIFA banned India from soccer because they used black magic in that very game

With the help of common sense (not that it was absent back then), quick access to information and the internet, every right thinking Nigerian has come to realise that such a story should be filled under “Blatant Lies”.

Why Did This Story Thrive For So Long?

Most people like to pass off this story as true with the fact that no one has ever seen India in an International Football Match. Since no one actually saw India participate in most international soccer games, this gave a little credence to the story.

Another reason this lie could thrive for long was the fact that credible information was not readily available at our finger tips. It not like every Emeka, Audu and Ojo could visit Google in a matter of minutes and tell our ominous fabricators that they should stop spreading toxic lies.

And to be honest we have a tingling feeling that this lie was concocted by an elder of a community because, let’s be honest who questions the words of the elders in Nigeria. Remember, what an adult sees sitting down a child will never see even if he consults Google, Siri or Cortana.

The Element of Truth In This Story

On the 12th of August 1989, Nigeria lost Sam Okwaraji.

Sam Okwaraji was the player rumored to have lost his life in that game when in truth he died during a FIFA World Cup qualifying game against Angola in the 77th minute.

He collapsed and died of cognitive heart failure. May his soul rest in Perfect Peace. AMEN

So that is the only truthful thing about that story, the fact that a Nigerian player died during a football match. That’s it. The match was not against India, we did not lose the match and as you must have guessed, and there were no lions either.

Crazy Things People Do During Harmattan Season In Jos

The Jos Plateau is the largest plateau in Nigeria and owing to its elevation, Jos is the coldest city in Nigeria (about the temperature of California, USA) for example, the temperature here now us about 15°C and it has gone south of 10°C at a point in this winter (Yes it is better referred to as winter, this one don pass ordinary harmattan) Because of this cold weather, people usually does some things that would be considered wild by Lagos standards. I present to you below, a few of
them.

1. Boiling water to brush teeth or do dishes:

Some people actually boil the water they wanted to use for brushing Their teeth or do their dishes because ordinary water will be freezing cold and coupled with the freezing breeze is a no no

2. Ladies wearing socks on ANYTHING they wore:

It is not uncommon seeing 'Big girls' wearing socks on office suits and skirts, even after dressing for an owanbe party, socks and gloves were freely worn on the Ankara and lace attires. In short, their is no dressing that's weird here, anything goes
PS: Weird dressing doesn't exclude men too o! I saw a man yesterday that wore a sweater over his shirt before putting on the suit jacket

3. Purposely Staying under the sun:

You'll see people intentionally staying under the sun as soon as it comes out just to feel the warmth of the greatest source of energy.

4. Bathing with boiled water:

I dare say that there is nobody I mean NOBODY in this Jos that has the effrontery to bath with ordinary water as history has it that some people actually froze to their death when they tried it in times past.

5. Putting on electric stove in the bedroom:

because of the unusual cold, some people will put on the electric stove at night just so they can be warm throughout the night.

6. Sleeping with more than two pieces of clothing on:

Its a common thing if people slept dressing like an astronaut, I mean with two trousers, two shirts, one Cardigan, head warmer and hear muffs, Hand gloves and socks all under a cover cloth/duvet! Lil!

If you're staying on the Jos or Taraba plateau please add yours.

Fresh students to join Unilorin internet platform soon–Ambali

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), has said that the University would be bringing its 12,650 fresh students on its internet platform before the end of the first quarter of the year.
Prof Ambali disclosed this last Tuesday (December 30, 2014) during a meeting with top management staff of telecommunications giant, Globacom Limited, in his office. At the end of the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the University and Globacom for the provision of integrated telecommunications services for the University of Ilorin community.
While receiving the report of the Google Student Ambassadors Summit in Accra, Ghana, from the 2014 Google Student Ambassadors penultimate Tuesday (December 23, 2014), the Vice-Chancellor said that the massive internet coverage would afford staff and students the uninterrupted use of the facility at any point in time to communicate with all parts of the world regardless of the time zone.
Responding to a proposal on international linkage with the renowned Indian Institute of Science and Technology by the Chief Commercial Director of Globacom, Mr. Prabhat Aggrawal, who led the company's team to the meeting, the Vice-Chancellor said that the University is always eager to exchange ideas and it never misses an opportunity to adopt best practices from around the world. He disclosed that the University already has a number of international partnership agreements with several foreign institutions in addition to having many foreign staff and students on its roll.
While speaking earlier, the Chief Commercial Director of Globacom disclosed that his personal first impression of the University of Ilorin was that of a well-managed institution, which surpassed his expectation.  He added that the University evoked a feeling of nostalgia in him of his days at the Indian Institute of Science, saying that he is keen on facilitating a relationship between the University of Ilorin and the Indian Institute of Science.

You just gotta admit this.

Is 'Being Smart' the same as 'Being Intelligent' ?

Often, the phrases 'you're smart!' and 'you're intelligent!' are used severally and/or interchangeably. But on a deeper introspection, the words, 'smart' and 'intelligent' actually bear different meanings.

In my opinion, being intelligent applies to the academic field and refers to someone who's good at academics, someone with good analytical skills required for tackling academic issues and problems.

Smartness, on the other hand, refers to having the common sense or sharp sense of reasoning to navigate the ups and downs of life, and knowing how to do the right thing at the right time to get what one wants.

While intelligence measures your academic ability and academic success, smartness measures your ability to identify and apply common sense in life to achieve what you want in life. In life, you often meet these 3 sets of people:

- the very intelligent people who are exceptional at academics but are not actually smart(good in academics but timid on the streets, lacking social skills to get along/interact with others, and the common sense required to survive on the streets are not street smart). Examples are, for example, a professor with many degrees and levels of academic success who still cannot balance his check book or cannot manage his finances to get him to a financially comfortable level.

- the very smart people who are exceptional in applying common sense in life but are only averagely intelligent in academics. Speak with them and they amaze you with their great deal of common sense and knowledge about how to get by in life, understand and manage people, etc) but academically they are only average. An example would be people who were seen as 'average' in school but who went on to build successful companies, businesses, or land amazing jobs because they had the common sense and social skills to get along in life and network with the right set of people.

- the smart and intelligent people at the same time - these people are intelligent and also street-savvy. They combine intelligence with common sense. These people are successful in their chosen fields of endeavour. An example would be Mrs. Okonjo Iweala, who is both intelligent and smart at the same time.

I think smartness is the application of intelligence or intelligence in motion. One cannot be smart if one isn't intelligent, at least, a little bit. To be smart, you need some level of intelligence, albeit how small it is.

These are only my opinions.

What are your opinions? What do you think?

UNILORIN to get 100% Internet coverage soon - Ambali

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof.  AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), has said that plans are underway to ensure 100 per cent internet coverage for the University community by next year.
Prof. Ambali disclosed this last Tuesday (December 23, 2014) while receiving the report of the Google Student Ambassadors Summit in Accra, Ghana, from the 2014 Google Student Ambassadors of the University, Abideen Olasupo, a 300 level student of Chemistry and Itodo Ene Patience, a 400 level student of Pharmacy, in his office.
The Vice-Chancellor said that the massive internet coverage would afford staff and students the uninterrupted use of the facility at any point in time to communicate with all parts of the world regardless of the time-zone.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the areas to be covered in this phase of the University's ICT revolution include the staff quarters on campus and in the GRA , student hostels on the University campuses as well as academic areas and offices.
Prof. Ambali disclosed that the Computer Services and Information Technology (COMSIT) Unit and the University management were working harmoniously  towards ensuring that members of the University community can always be in touch with all parts of the world anywhere they are and at anytime, whether they are on the road or at home.
While congratulating the University Google Ambassadors on their achievements, the Vice-Chancellor said that the management of the University as well as the entire University community were very proud of the students. He noted that the University management would want other students to emulate that kind of achievement so that the whole world would see why Unilorin is better by far.
Prof. Ambali disclosed that he and other members of the University management are always happy to empower the students with whatever they may require so that the world would acknowledge the University as an important part and a major player in the academic global village.
Presenting the report on behalf of the duo,  Olasupo urged the University management to help in supporting their upcoming programmes in the 2014/ 2015 session.
The two students, who were chosen after a competitive selection process conducted by Google, told Unilorin Bulletin that they had lined up a number of activities for the 2014/2015 academic session. These include, registration of Google Students' Club; Career Service and Empowerment; Google+ Hangout on Air with notable personalities drawn from within and outside the country; Unilorin Geo Walk/Mapping Event; Introduction of Google opportunities (Google Cloud Developers Challenge, Google Online Marketing Challenge, Youtube monetization, and Google Students' Ambassador Programme) .
According to the Google Ambassadors, the other activities are: Google Mobile Event, training on Unilorin Android Apps, Google Apps for Education Training (Gmail, Google Maps, Google+, Google Calendar and Google Drive) for University and Secondary School students.
The duo, however, noted that to make a success of these activities, they would require support from the University's management in the provision of 24-hour internet access on event days; free venues to be used for the events, and facilities like sound system, and projector.
They pointed out that the programmes would give students the opportunity to create google products, which can earn them $250 each, earn money from youtube and create platforms for more students of the University to become   Google Student Ambassadors.
With the Vice-Chancellor at the ceremony were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof Y. M. Fakunle; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. N. Y. S. Ijaiya; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. G. A. Olatunji; and the University Librarian, Dr. J. O. Omoniyi.
